TRANSPORT groups ended their strike Monday after the government promised to grant their petition for a fare increase, one of their leaders said.

The Department of Transportation and Communication (DoTC) will approve in the first week of May a jeepney group's petition for a 2.50-peso increase in the minimum fare for the first four kilometers and another 0.25-peso increase for every succeeding kilometer, Efren de Luna, president of Philippine Concerned Drivers Organization-Alliance of Concerned Transport Organization (PCDO-ACTO) said.

This will bring the minimum fare to 8.00 pesos from 5.50 pesos and the charge for every succeeding kilometer in excess of the first four kilometers to 1.25 pesos from 1.00 peso, De Luna said in a phone interview.

“It's okay. The strike is off. Secretary [Leandro] Mendoza promised to give a fare increase in the first week of May,” De Luna said, after meeting with Mendoza, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairperson Ma. Elena Bautista, and other transport leaders.

Mendoza also agreed to call for a transport summit next week to discuss the other grievances of the transport sector, De Luna said.

Metro Manila police chief Deputy Director General Avelino Razon Jr., who was also at the meeting, confirmed De Luna's claim that they were promised a fare increase.

“The strike was generally peaceful. There were no untoward incidents,” he said in a separate interview.
